Joyful Writing: Fostering Young Writers in PreK and K
Nurture young children’s love for writing through storytelling, drawing, and book making.
This workshop guides early childhood teachers in building joyful writing communities through play, storytelling, book making, and drawing. Participants learn to view children’s early writing with fresh insight and plan purposeful lessons that build confidence, develop craft, and support foundational writing conventions.
- Classroom Teachers & Interventionists
Discover how to nurture joyful, confident early writers in your classroom. This workshop invites teachers to explore the foundations of the writing process and examine how playful, developmentally appropriate practices support young children as they grow as storytellers and book makers. Bring samples of student writing and learn to view children’s marks, drawings, and attempts at writing through a new lens— one that highlights their strengths, intentions, and emerging skills.
Participants will learn to:
- Build a community of young writers through playful, collaborative learning
- Engage children in oral storytelling as a foundation for writing
- Help students develop their writing identities by creating books of their own
- Utilize drawing to help children know what they can do as writers and artists
- Plan and facilitate purposeful focus lessons on writing craft and early conventions
You’ll earn 5 professional development hours in this training.
