The New Benchmark Assessment System 2.0 (System 1, Levels A-P)

Confidently transform reading assessment into meaningful instruction. This two-day workshop will help you learn to use the BAS 2.0 system to pinpoint student strengths and needs as readers, including oral reading behaviors, fluency, comprehension, writing about reading, phonological awareness, and early phonics skills.

Benchmark Assessment System 1 (BAS) 2.0, used with students in grades K-2, is a comprehensive assessment system that provides teachers with critical information about each student’s reading abilities including:
- oral reading behaviors
- phonological awareness
- phonics
- fluency
- comprehension
- writing about reading
- concepts about print
BAS 2.0 features fiction and nonfiction texts, assessments for early reading behaviors, and book-specific comprehension rubrics.
Through demonstration, guided practice, and discussion, you will learn how to administer, score, and analyze student results from the Benchmark Assessment System 2.0 and learn how to use the information gathered to inform whole group, small group, and individual instruction.
Workshop Outcomes
- Record and analyze oral reading behaviors including word solving, fluency, and comprehension.
- Gather and use information about students’ concepts about print, phonological awareness, and phonics understandings to inform instruction.
- Conduct standardized comprehension conversations and use book-specific scoring rubrics.
- Determine independent, instructional, and placement reading levels.
- Determine the instructional implications for whole-group, small-group, and individual instruction.
- Use writing about reading to learn more about students as readers.
You’ll earn 10 clock hours for this training.
Heather Rodman, Literacy Trainer
Heather Rodman has been a Literacy Trainer at Lesley University’s Center for Literacy Teaching and Instructional Leadership for 12 years. As a former elementary classroom teacher and literacy coach, she brings 30 years of experience in literacy education, instructional coaching, and professional learning. Heather works with educators, literacy coaches, and school leaders to develop teacher expertise that leads to student success.

Cancellation Deadline & Refund Policies
You have until one week before the first day of this offering to cancel your registration. The cancellation deadline is Wednesday, September 16, 2026. There is a $50 cancellation fee. If you request a cancellation after the deadline, you will not be issued a refund. Substitution requests are acceptable. Please email centerliteracyteaching@lesley.edu if you have a cancellation or substitution request.

Requirements for Participation
After the training, you will receive a certificate of attendance for your participation. To receive a complete certificate, participation during the specified times is required. Additional work may be assigned to meet the clock hours.
In-Person or Virtual Attendance
You may choose to attend this training in-person at Lesley University or virtually in real time. Should any of the conditions change and it is determined the training will be offered virtually only, you will be notified as soon as possible. We recommend that you contact us before reserving travel and lodging.
If you choose to attend in-person, the training room will have Lesley University’s HyFlex Classroom Technology to support an engaging learning environment for in-person and virtual participants.
