The William Channing Elementary School

District:
Boston Public Schools

Location:
Hyde Park, Massachusetts

Type of Engagement:
Comprehensive Partnership including School Leaders, Leadership Teams, Literacy Collaborative, Reading Recovery, and LLI – Focus on System-wide Coherence and Teacher Expertise.

Outcomes:The Channing School’s partnership with the Center for Reading Recovery and Literacy Collaborative began in 2013 when the school was identified by the Massachusetts Department of Education as a turnaround school. Principal Carline Pignato worked closely with CRRLC faculty to develop a comprehensive long-term plan for literacy improvement focusing on improving the knowledge and decision-making abilities of teachers. A school-wide focus on literacy helped Channing exit turnaround status and earn 3rd grade ELA MCAS results that greatly surpassed the rest of the district.
