Outcomes:The Channing School’s partnership with the Center for Reading Recovery and Literacy Collaborative began in 2013 when the school was identified by the Massachusetts Department of Education as a turnaround school. Principal Carline Pignato worked closely with CRRLC faculty to develop a comprehensive long-term plan for literacy improvement focusing on improving the knowledge and decision-making abilities of teachers. A school-wide focus on literacy helped Channing exit turnaround status and earn 3rd grade ELA MCAS results that greatly surpassed the rest of the district.

Every Student Matters

There is a growing body of research on what it means to matter, to feel seen, valued, and significant, and the findings are clear: when students experience a genuine sense of mattering, they are more willing to engage, more likely to take risks, and more able to persist through challenges. They become more secure learners. They perform better. How might this translate to literacy instruction?
